Before I Die Community Project

(Temporary- no longer visible) The Independent – 1049 Central Ave, St. Petersburg, FL 33705

Before I Die is a global art project inviting people to reflect on their lives and share personal aspirations in a public space by completing the sentence, “Before I die I want to _______.”

The project was started by Candy Chang on an abandoned house in New Orleans in 2011. After she lost someone she loved, Chang covered a plywood wall with chalkboard paint, attached containers of chalk, and stenciled on dozens of lines reading “Before I die I want to _______.” Anyone walking by could pick up a piece of chalk and share their thoughts, feelings, and goals.

More than 1,000 Before I Die public walls have now been created in more than 70 countries, including Iraq, Haiti, China, Ukraine, Japan, Denmark, and South Africa.

The project comes to St. Petersburg, Florida, USA, during this year’s SHINE St. Petersburg Mural Festival. The new Before I Die wall will be located at 1049 Central Avenue, directly across from SHINE Headquarters, on the exterior of the new Independent Bar. Visitors can stop by around the clock to add their aspirations and read the passionate goals of others in their community.
